Funds Breakfast at Gibraltar Day in London 2025

The Gibraltar Funds and Investment Association (GFIA) was proud to take part in this year’s Gibraltar Day in London (#GIBLND25), hosted by HM Government of Gibraltar and Gibraltar Finance under the leadership of The Hon. Nigel Feetham KC MP, Minister for Justice, Trade and Industry.

Now in its 25th year, Gibraltar Day in London has become a cornerstone event for the jurisdiction’s financial services sector — showcasing the strength, innovation, and collaboration that define Gibraltar’s international reputation.

This year’s programme featured a dedicated focus on Gibraltar’s funds industry. GFIA Chairman Jonathan Garcia (ISOLAS LLP) moderated the panel discussion on “The Evolution of Funds in Gibraltar”, joined by Heather Adamson (Ramparts), Sam Vatvani (Gibraltar Financial Services Commission), Marta Wyrobek (Sigil PCC Limited), James Lasry (Hassans) and Jay Gomez (Triay Lawyers). Together, they represented the depth and expertise of Gibraltar’s fund and investment community.

The discussion traced the jurisdiction’s progress from its early fund structures in 1999 to the development of its dual regime, which provides both EU-aligned and non-EU flexibility through the EIFD optional framework. This balance of structure and adaptability has enabled Gibraltar to remain competitive and attractive to both institutional and private investors.

Speakers highlighted the unique collaboration between government, regulator, and industry — described as Gibraltar’s “holy trio” — that continues to drive innovation in financial services. The panel also explored how the jurisdiction’s approach to principles-based regulation has allowed it to evolve responsibly, fostering investor confidence while encouraging new forms of financial innovation.

A key theme of the session was the ongoing development of crypto funds, an area where Gibraltar continues to lead on the global stage. The jurisdiction’s DLT Code of Conduct, introduced in 2018, has established a clear and credible framework for distributed ledger technology businesses — setting standards for corporate governance, risk management, and consumer protection. This principles-based approach has since been extended to the funds space, enabling managers and service providers to operate within a consistent and trusted environment.

Gibraltar’s commitment to robust yet flexible regulation has positioned it as one of the top jurisdictions worldwide for crypto funds. As highlighted by PwC’s Global Crypto Hedge Fund Report, Gibraltar ranks second globally for the number of crypto funds domiciled, underlining the jurisdiction’s reputation as a centre of excellence for digital asset management.

The panel also featured reflections on the importance of collaboration between traditional and digital finance, and how Gibraltar’s regulatory model — grounded in trust, transparency, and dialogue — enables innovation to flourish without compromising market integrity.

The session was followed by a compelling keynote presentation from Dr. Paul Bilokon, an internationally recognised expert in artificial intelligence and quantitative finance. His address on the role of AI in the evolution of financial services highlighted how emerging technologies are shaping the future of investment management, compliance, and market efficiency — themes that strongly resonate with Gibraltar’s forward-thinking approach to innovation.

Gibraltar Day in London 2025 once again demonstrated the jurisdiction’s leadership in both traditional and emerging financial sectors. As the industry continues to evolve, GFIA remains focused on ensuring that Gibraltar’s voice — and its vision for responsible innovation — continues to lead internationally.

To round off the week, GFIA hosted an exclusive supper on Thursday evening in partnership with House of Block, bringing together industry leaders, innovators, and key stakeholders for an evening of discussion, networking, and collaboration. The event provided a fitting close to an inspiring and productive Gibraltar Day in London.
